Finding Inspiration for Your Wedding Flowers

The best weddings are like the best marriages; a coming together of two distinct individuals, making a whole that is even more exciting and original than its parts. The personalities of both bride and groom should infuse every aspect of your day, from the choice of food to the invitations. The flowers are no exception. Here are three ways you can find inspiration for wedding flowers to make them entirely personal to you:

Your Character and Style

We all have our own unique style, and to find it, look at yourself in the mirror or consider how you have furnished your home. A high-flyer city-girl might favour a chic little posy of white tulips or an orchid shower bouquet, whereas a bride in love with all things vintage might choose an elegant bouquet of roses in ivories and pinks, highlighted with crystals and pearls. Make a ‘mood board’ of cuttings and photos of places and things that you love and you’ll see that inspiration can come from the strangest place. The colour of your car, your favourite item of jewellery or your sexiest dress all say a lot about you and can all be used to inspire your wedding flowers.

Raid your Past

Memories and mementos are powerful places from which to draw inspiration. Consider including flowers grown in your grandmother’s garden or the first flowers your husband to be ever treated you with. If there is a sentimental piece of jewellery or indeed ‘something borrowed’ it could be woven into the bridal bouquet or added to the ribbon covering the stems.

The Meaning of Flowers

The language of flowers started in the harems of the Middle East, where secrecy between lovers was essential.  Each flower had a meaning and secret messages could be exchanged. The Victorians took this language to their hearts and produced several dictionaries of the language of flowers... Consider including in your wedding bouquet a flower with a meaning that’s special to you. Here are some of the most popular wedding flowers and their meanings:

  • Anemone: Unfading love / Sincerity
  • Baby’s Breath: Everlasting love / Happiness
  • White Carnation: Innocence / Pure love
  • Blue Hyacinth: Consistency
  • Jasmine: Grace / Elegance
  • Lavender: Devotion
  • Lilac: First Love
  • Calla Lily: Beauty
  • Lily: Purity
  • Lily of the Valley: Sweetness / Humility
  • Orchid: Love / Beauty
  • Peony: Bashfulness
  • Red Rose: I love you / Passion
  • White Rose: Eternal love / Heavenly
  • Yellow Rose: Joy / Friendship
  • Pink Rose: Perfect Happiness
  • Stephanotis: Desire / Happiness in Marriage
  • Sunflower: Loyalty
  • Tulip: Declaration of love.
