Setting the Tone with Your Wedding Stationery
It’s often stated “your invitations should set the tone for your wedding day”, however, many of my clients are slightly panicked by the thought of “setting the tone”. One of the most frequently asked questions I have been asked is “how do I do this?”
Setting a theme doesn’t mean you have to blow your entire budget on gold encrusted, Swarovski embellished, full colour, spot-varnished high-gloss million-dollar invites (though I am sure they would look very nice if you did). What it does mean is that you have an opportunity to communicate to your guests the style and feel of your wedding and make them feel as comfortable and as fully informed as possible.

Your starting point is to include as much information as you can and combine this with any colour scheme you may have (this avoids a room full of people wearing the same as the bridesmaids!) and some hint of the style of the wedding. For example, if you are having a country wedding add some soft, floral, romantic styling. If you are having a city wedding keep it minimal & eclectic. If your venue was built in a certain era, let your guests embrace your inspiration by featuring an image of the venue. Conversely, you may want your invites to double up as a keepsake and simply be all about the two of you: I recently attended a wedding where the invitation illustrated an English / South African union and used rugby motifs to illustrate their nationalities; it was a lovely, personal touch.

Whatever the style of your invites just remember it’s important to communicate the type of occasion and not just assume your guests will Google your venue. Let your guests know if it’s formal, informal, indoor or outdoor, is it substantial canapé’s or a full sit down? If you are having a formal black tie gathering; emphasise this through the style of your cards, then your guests are prepared for cocktails and canapés and they’ll know if arriving by limo is appropriate!
