Choosing Your Wedding Cake Decorations - Fresh or Sugar Flowers?

My clients often request flowers as a decoration on their wedding cake, and I always discuss the option of using either fresh flowers or sugar flower displays.

Incorporating flowers into your cake design makes it really easy for you to compliment any floral theme or colour scheme that you may be having at your reception. You could choose a plain iced cake and decorate it with an abundance of fresh flowers (please note that you should always ask your florist which flowers are best for use with food, some flowers are toxic and therefore are not suitable for cake displays). Alternatively, the floral displays can be crafted out of sugar which will not only create a beautiful and delicately decorated cake, but will also be a talking point for your guests. It is worth mentioning that sugar craft is very time consuming so the price of a cake decorated with sugar flowers is likely to rise considerably compared to using fresh flowers. If you love the idea of using sugar flowers, but it is not within your budget, then why not ask your cake maker to create a smaller ‘feature’ flower display for the top or the side of the cake. Personally, I love cakes that are decorated with fresh flowers, but sugar flowers are such an art, it seems a shame not to use them if you have the opportunity.
