2012 Wedding Cake Trends
Wedding cake designs, like wedding themes, are influenced by the world of fashion and the styles that are in vogue. Vintage chintz, rustic charm, glam and boho are all incredibly popular themes for weddings at the moment, and are being featured heavily on wedding blogs and of course in bridal magazines.

‘Couture’ style cakes which match details from the bride’s dress, shoes or jewellery, are in fashion right now, as are designs with decorative lacework, sugar pearls, textured ruffles and sweet cameos. That said, traditional floral designs with sugar flowers and/or brushwork are still a popular choice for couples, as flowers are usually a big part of the decoration at the reception.
Colours still tend to be mainly whites and ivories and sometimes pastels for the icing, with accents of brighter/darker colours (even black) here and there to help tie in with the colour scheme of the wedding if desired. Large bows and diamante trims are being used to glam up cakes, and are an inexpensive choice for decoration if your theme for this year is ‘austerity chic’.
Last year’s Royal Wedding is also having an impact on the style of cakes in 2012. We are seeing a return to the more traditional Lambeth piping techniques, although they are being simplified and look more modern. Of course, a wedding cake should tie in with the theme or style of the wedding so, whatever the design, it needs to look as though it belongs. If you are having a country-style wedding for example, you wouldn’t go for a highly ornately piped cake like William and Kate’s.
Wedding cake designs in the UK are also influenced by trends in other countries, especially America and Canada, so if you want to be ahead of the crowd in 2012 make sure you sneak a peek over the Pond.
