5 Ways to Prevent Marital Weight Gain

Last month new research found that while divorce tends to make men pile on the pounds, it’s marital bliss that makes women gain a dress size or two. This can be due to a variety of (often complex) factors, but the important thing is to nip it in the bud quick.

Here are my 5 top tips for preventing marital weight gain.

  1. Don’t match your partner portion-for-portion. The chances are your other half will burn way more calories than you do on a daily basis due to his size and gender, so it’s important to dish up portion sizes accordingly.
  2. Remember food is fuel. It’s easy to settle into cosy domestic life, especially as winter approaches, and end up cooking large, rich meals for comfort. Try and explore healthy options like stir fries, soups and comforting winter salads that provide nourishment without pushing the needle up on the scales.
  3. Don’t forget to exercise! That doesn’t mean you have to take out a his ’n’ hers gym membership – you can opt for adventurous and visit your local climbing wall, or locate your nearest squash court. Better still, retain your independence and go solo – carve out some me time in the form of a favourite exercise class, Sunday morning run or a solitary evening swim.
  4. Get walking. You don’t need to spend hours in your trainers for it to count. Strolling around stately homes or even a shopping centre will still count as miles on the clock – think around 100 calories per mile.
  5. Get a dog! It’s not just daily walks that burn calories when owning a pet – throwing balls, walking faster than you normally would (when being pulled along on a lead) and chasing after your pup when he won’t come when called, all add up to a fabulous mini-workout.
