Civil Partnerships - Love Is All You Need

Let’s talk about what’s really important: love! This has to be one of the main reasons why most gay men and lesbians want to get married; or it should be! It may sound rather corny, but love is a beautiful thing. It is at the heart of the civil partnership ceremony, when you stand together, in front of family and friends, exchange your vows and commit to being together.

Romance aside, a purely practical consideration for holding a civil partnership is the desire to protect one another’s assets and secure your financial future. Decades of injustice and inequality have seen couples excluded by the law. Having the same tax, pension and inheritance rights is something that seems perfectly normal to most heterosexual people; a right! For the gay community however, this is an issue that has been fought over and disputed for many years.

Civil partnerships are still in their early days, they are virtually the same as marriage in all but name. They give couples the chance to show the rest of society how committed, gay relationships are an important part of contemporary life. Being able to formally recognise a relationship has always been a fundamental part of society and its relevance is just as important today. Civil partnerships can bring families together, heal wounds and strengthen the bonds that bind us. Of course there are always going to be problems, there will always be those who cannot see that a healthy loving relationship between two people of the same sex is as valid as another, but then no one’s perfect!
