Live Music at Weddings - New Song Trends

Live music at weddings seems to be moving in a new direction, and some of the traditional wedding songs are now not as popular as they once were...

Everyone has their own ideas about what they want from their wedding entertainment, and why not, it’s your big day and you want it to be special and tailored for you and your tastes.  Meeting up with our potential clients is one of my favourite parts of my job (aside from the singing itself!) because I love getting to know what each couple wants, and this week I’ve been swamped with meetings with ‘bride and grooms to be’.

One thing that seems to be a common theme is that people seem to want to move away from the now-seen-as-old-fashioned music choices that we’ve all heard played at a million weddings before. Every single couple I’ve met with this week has said to me, ‘No cheese allowed’! This is interesting because five, even two years ago, things were very different.

I’ve noticed it when we’re actually performing as well. If we’d played ‘We are Family’ five years ago the dance floor would be full, filled with family members coming together and singing at the top of their voices. However, these days if we play that song people do still dance, but more in an ‘I’m supposed to be dancing’ sort of way rather than an ‘I love this song and just can’t get enough’ sort of manner. The tunes now that seem to be having a better reaction are things like ‘I Gotta Feeling’ by Black Eyed Peas, and ‘Empire State of Mind’ by Alicia Keys.

So it seems that times are changing. Gone are the days when ‘I Will Survive’ is an absolute must-have for Wedding entertainment. It seems like people have heard this enough at weddings and are ready for something different, new and exciting!

Here are a few suggestions of great tunes that seem to get the crowd screaming for more:

Crowd Pleasers

  • I Gotta Feeling – Black Eyed Peas
  • Valerie – Amy Winehouse
  • Empire State of Mind – Alicia Keys
  • Mr Brightside – Killers
  • Sex on Fire – Kings of Leon
  • Use Somebody – Kings of Leon
  • Don’t Stop Believing – Journey
  • Just Dance – Lady Gaga
  • Poker Face – Lady Gaga
  • Greatest Day – Take That
  • Rule the World – Take That
  • Mercy – Duffy
  • Don’t Upset the Rhythm – The Noisettes

Of course a few golden oldies will always work well and everyone has different tastes, but it’s interesting how times change, and I think when you book your wedding entertainment, whether it be a DJ, a solo singer or a band, it’s important that they’re able to move with the times!

Love & Hugs & Happy Wedding Planning,

Sera
