Wedding Flower Trends
With new bridal collections being launched and 2011 brides starting to think about colour schemes and styling, it is the perfect time to talk about wedding flower trends for the next year. Without doubt I have recently seen an increase of brides that are using a much greater intensity of colour – think electric blues, aqua, magenta, bright purple and lime greens. This provides exciting possibilities for flowers.
Colour can really help set the mood for your wedding and using a blend of bright colours will provide a very joyful, warm and happy atmosphere. The mix of cerise, orange and raspberry reds is a favourite and looks stunning against pink or red dresses in the summer months. Favourite flowers for this type of scheme are gloriosa lilies, dahlias, hydrangeas and tulips.

When trying to incorporate a more unusual colour onto your table such as teal or electric blue, think about wrapping vases with material, sinking coloured wire into tall vases or using water dye. If you are placing flowers under water you get a fantastic magnification and the bloom will appear a lot bigger, the water seems to pick up details that you wouldn’t normally notice. This provides something really interesting for your guests to look at when sat at their table. Flowers that work really well underwater include orchids, calla lilies and roses.

Candles have always been a favourite at weddings as they provide such a romantic feel, they are relatively inexpensive and they can also uplight faces to make beautiful photographs. Perhaps think of different ways of using candles rather than just a collection of tea lights. A more eclectic mix of vessels in which to hold candles can look amazing and floating candles are particularly effective, lying on top of underwater flowers.

Whilst bold colour is certainly big news, there are many brides that will opt for nude colour that works so well with the vintage glamour inspired dresses of the 1920s and 40s. The styling trends will move away from the kitsch country tea party look to a more opulent, elegant feel – think candelabra, cocktail shakers and other metallic vessels. A mass of tonal roses, peonies and hydrangea bring impact and femininity. If you require a heavily petalled flower when peonies are out of season, think about ranunculus , frilly tulips, both available from November to June, double bloom lisianthus – all year round and stunning autumnal large headed chrysanths in very soft blush pinks.

Scent is big news and again creates such a lovely ambience for your guests to walk into. Try using beautifully scented blooms that are not too overpowering – stocks, lilac, freesia and eucalyptus foliage are some of my favourites and will really make a difference in a large, old church or a hotel setting.
Finally, blossom is another key trend. Although short lived, for anyone marrying between March and May, you can create some seriously beautiful arrangements that double up as table plans or wishing trees. Cherry, apple and magnolia branches make a stunning backdrop and will definitely be featuring heavily in 2011 weddings.

Never underestimate how flowers can simply bring so much expression and life to a “blank canvas”…from a single bloom to a lavish display.
