Wedding Reception Welcome Drinks
When it come to welcome drinks at a wedding reception, it's time to move away from the warm orange juice and unappealing glass of wine - here are my top tips on how to greet your guests.
All too often we go to beautiful weddings where every detail has been thought of, other than the welcome drinks. Following your ceremony, you’re likely to greet guests at the reception venue with a glass of something. It’s an important moment, your first opportunity to chat to friends and family as Mr & Mrs and for your guests to congratulate you. Here’s how to get it right.

- Speak to your wedding venue about what non-alcoholic drinks they can offer. Water is essential, along with another soft drink. Try to avoid a heavy fruit juice and instead opt for something light and refreshing such as elderflower cordial.
- When it comes to the alcoholic option, a glass of bubbly will always be appreciated. You don’t need to splash out on Champagne here - instead look out for Prosecco or Cava.
- As an addition to bubbly, consider the time of year. If you’re having a summer wedding, Pimm’s or a long cocktail is great. In the winter, how about winter Pimm’s or a warming whisky and ginger?
- Alongside the drinks, offer your guests a selection of canapés - alcohol on an empty stomach is never a good idea. Canapés should be bite size and include options for vegetarian guests.
- Concerned about the budget? If you’re serving plenty of canapés, scrap the starter and go straight in to your main course.
- And finally... make sure your guests are comfortable. If you’re allocating an hour for drinks, be sure to offer some seating and plenty of shade from the sunshine.
